MARYLAND (7News) — Maryland vehicle owners will soon see new fees that will go toward future transit projects per new state legislation.
Starting July 1, The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will implement the new fees and increase registration rates, with prices that could increase by up to 60-70 percent.
According to the MVA, the new base rate for registration fees, which has not changed since 2004, is based on vehicle class and weight.
Fees will also increase for electric vehicle owners, who'll have to pay a $250 biannual surcharge to offset the growing number of cars not paying the state's gas tax.
Officials said it's the result of the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act of 2024, which includes a compromise between the Maryland House and Senate to pump billions of dollars into road and transit projects over the next five years.
The vehicle fees will also offset emergency service and trauma response costs, according to the MVA.
